What is endometriosis?
The occurrence of uterine mucosa (endometrium) outside of the uterus is called endometriosis.
It is a benign health problem affecting women, which, depending on the location and extent of the sites, can cause strong pain and is not seldom the cause of infertility.
If the endometriosis is not treated it continues to spread.
Localization of endometriosis
- on the peritoneum in the pelvis (1)
- on the uterine ligaments (2)
- on the ovaries (3)
- the back of the uterus and the posterior cul de sac (4)
- on neighbouring organs (bladder, intestine) (5)
- rarely in unrelated organs such as the lung
Prevalence
70-80% of all chronic abdominal pain is due to endometriosis
10% of all women of reproductive age suffer from endometriosis
